Absurd

I left work a bit early...just to drive around aimlessly until 6pm, when you can park on the street again. *sigh* As I was circling the blocks, I found myself in an alley just off of 4th street with about 10 minutes to go. There were tons of people crossing the alley making it hard to get back on the street, which was fine with me -- the longer I could wait in the alley, the less I had to circle...but after a few minutes the crowds seemed to break. I figured I should go, when a pack of little Asian boys started to cross in front of me. One of them waved at me from his skateboard, which I took as a signal from him to make sure I saw them and wouldn't hit them with my car. I smiled and waited. He smiled back and waved again. Then his friends looked over and they seemed to discuss me... Then the kid looked over again and gave me the hand signal...to call him.

I now have 12 year olds flirting with me on the street...

Locked out

My apartment manager told me when I moved in that I should always leave the door knob unlocked because that way I will never lock myself out -- I'll always need the keys to lock the deadbolts and, therefore, to lock the door. Well, he was wrong. My top dead bolt is a little touchy so apparently, when I shut the door too hard, it will lock all by itself.

Great.

I'm standing in the hallway listening to the pothead guys down the hall rap about Oakland on some kind of crappy PA system. Young, white, fratboy/indie rocker looking dudes. (Hey, does that mean they're hipsters? Guess it depends on who's defining hipster, huh... ?) Supposedly they are 17 and one of their father's signed for them to live here on their own. Lucky us. Although, I have to admit that they are pretty nice, and ... decent rappers? Decent might be too generous... ambitious rappers. ...er, well, they're rappers.

I got myself in this predicament by doing laundry in my building instead of going to the laundry mat.

Work snippet

Over IM --

Co-worker: (something like...) The CEO loves me... But I want to do this thing and I don't want her to be mad and blah blah... (This is a bad dramatization to hide this person's identity.)

Me: With great power comes great responsibility.

Co-worker: Sarcasm. Nice.

Me: I'm not being sarcastic, I'm quoting Spiderman.

Crazytown!

One way to fend off the post show blues is to get yourself into another show or project so, before closing yesterday, I auditioned for a short film and was cast. Woohoo!

It's a quick project, so they told me they wanted me to do a photo shoot with them today and I needed to do 50s hair and make up, and wear a 50s style wedding dress... ?! Yeah, cause everyone has a 50s wedding dress lying around and is an expert in hair and make up. Luckily, my friend Gabriella is quite talented in hair and make up and totally gets the 50s, so she came to my rescue!! My face and hair in this picture are a result of her great handy work. You can't fully see my hair because it's in a hair net. She also had a perfect dress to loan me! I'm so lucky to have such a generous and talented friend. :)

Parting is such sweet sorrow...

The show closed tonight. We had a great audience and ended with a really strong performance. I am proud of the work I did on this show. *sigh* ...and, on to the post show blues...

"Don't pass up this opportunity..." Jimmy says.

I went to my favorite sushi restaurant tonight. The owner of the restaurant has been trying to fix me up with his best friend for years.... and, here I am, single again. Unfortunately, I'm terrible with understanding people with accents, so all of the wonderful things about this guy were mostly lost in translation...but it was made clear to me that I should not pass up this opportunity.

The saga continues...

Complicated with no reason.

Or, should it be, complicated for no reason. Is that like a rebel without a cause?

Today, I was making things more complicated than they should've been, and I pointed it out as a characteristic of mine to someone in an email message. The person wrote back with, "I've noticed that about you. It's kind of cute ;)". ...I've always thought of my over-active mind as a character flaw, and something that I should work to control. Most people tend to agree that I'm capable of thinking myself crazy...but this simple comment somehow made me feel like I would be okay...

Land's end

Today, I hung out with Jen and Trevor at Land's End...and beyond. :) A perfect way to end the weekend.

What a freaking weekend!

We had a rough show on Friday night. Of course that was the night all of my friends showed up... but, oh well. Afterwards, I had great impromptu girl's night out with some of my favorite girls. :) Saturday, I fought Dave at the marina (stage combat), and then headed to Angel Island for a birthday party. I got to meet Wilder James Waters that day!! The show that night went well -- after I threatened to pull Scott's chest hair if he missed a line. *sigh* ...oh, the wonderful things that transpire in the backstage of a show... I'd like to erase the rest of that night, if I could, and leave it at a good show. ...which brings us to today. Audition, Land's End, Sutro bathes, San Rafael, quick dinner out with some good conversation, and here I am.

Vintage shirts and hugs...

...I feel like I could use both right about now.

the guy at the audition said I had a great voice and was beautiful on stage...and that I should keep training and hopefully he'll see more of my work soon. Not a brutal rejection, but it confirms two things for me. One, that I should never try to audition with a piece that I haven't worked on at all, and two, that it would be a good idea for me to actually pursue more formal training rather than continuing to fumble through the edges of this industry just winging it.

:)

Self torture and strenuous exercise

It seems to encompass what it's like to be single, doesn't it? Self torture and strenuous exercise...

That's the name of the first Kondoleon play I ever read. It's weird and brilliant. He manages to capture the complete absurdity of dysfunctional relationships in a perfect and humorous way.

I've been called to audition for the Asian theater company in town. I'm going to try to pull off a monologue from another of Kondoleon's plays. I'm so not ready to do that... Self torture...

Backstage

Me and my Romeo-savior-hero-of-the-day.

Three weeks before opening, one of the guys in two of our acts (it's a series of one acts) decided to drop out. Just like that. One of the acts he was in was with me, playing Romeo to my Juliet in a silly little play about a guy and a girl who are cast as Romeo and Juliet but have a romantic history that didn't end well. The drama off the stage ensues....

Scott stepped in to take original Romeo's place. He only really had two weeks to get it together before we found ourselves at opening night. I think he and I rehearsed three times together? ...and, he was great and totally SAVED THE DAY. My hero with the velvet voice. :)

Scott also played Dracula with me in the Monsters show.

Love, life, lunacy...

The show opens tomorrow. I'm not sure I'm ready. I've never been so unsure of my lines for a show -- I'm not sure why? I guess I usually just learn the entire play with all the lines, just so I know everything and can pick up anywhere, but this time I felt... that it wasn't as necessary? And I found in rehearsal that not knowing the other person's lines kept me more in the moment. Like, actually not knowing what they were going to say made me really listen and respond, which is what you always strive for on stage...but, here I am, the night before we open, freaking out. At the same time, I feel like I'm almost not freaking out as much as I should be, considering.

Melt

French noir and French food made me want to sleeeep....!

This is supposed to be a "best of the bay" fondue place, but you can't just order for one, and Jen doesn't believe in cheese. haha, either that, or she's vegan. :)

I heart Oakland

Last night I tried to make it out to the city for a birthday party, but I couldn't find anyone to go with, so I ended up going with some friends to a club in Oakland instead. The club we went to was previously known as Sweet Jimmies's. There are places that seem to breathe the history and culture of Oakland. This is one of them.

O

Last night in Vegas. Loved the clowns in O. Loved the diving. Loved the water...but wanted a stronger storyline. I think I liked OVO better. :) Although, I feel like being in a tent makes a difference. Regardless, it was still an amazing show.

The other side of Vegas

Just a minute off the strip is The Arts Factory, a huge warehouse space split into little artist galleries.

Vegas has a huge art district full of talented local artists! What a fantastic local find...I'm so inspired right now. First Thursdays is a preview night at the Factory. First Fridays they take their art to the streets and have a huge showing of all the art in the community.
